Health and safety

Today's increasing populations create a challenge for safe and efficient waste disposal. Concerns about air quality have prompted many municipalities to ban burning as a method of waste disposal as it may become a health risk and nuisance by reason of the emission of smoke, fumes, fly ash, dust or soot.

Landfills are filling up quickly. They are either no longer accepting landscape and tree debris, or are charging high fees for the dumping of these products. They are accepting demolition waste, but prefer it to be in a compacted form, giving the customer a break in fee if it is compacted.

Municipalities

Local governments are handling tree and brush debris, resulting from the clean up efforts due to storm damage or road and park clean up, by chipping with their own work forces. This creates large piles of chips which they offer to their residents. These piles do go down, but the trend seems to be going towards the public wanting a finer, mulch product.
